Fredric Wertham was a very influential psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a doctor who studies how the mind works. He was born Friedrich Ignatz Wertheimer in Nuremberg, Germany, on March 20, 1895. He later moved to the United States and became a citizen.

Wertham was known for many different types of work. He helped poor patients at his Lafargue Clinic in Harlem. His research on social stress even helped change laws about school segregation. This helped end rules that kept Black and white students apart in schools.

Wertham is most famous for his ideas about comic books. In 1954, he wrote a book called "Seduction of the Innocent." He believed that violent stories in comics caused children to become criminals. He focused on "crime comics" that showed things like fighting or scary scenes.

He also worried about advertisements for knives or air rifles in these books. He even testified before a group in the U.S. government. He wanted new laws to stop children under fifteen from reading these comics.

His work led to big changes in the comic book world. Because of his influence, publishers created the Comics Code Authority. This was a group that checked comics to make sure they were safe. They even banned certain words like "terror" or "zombies." This group made sure that criminals in stories were always punished.

These new rules changed what kind of stories could be printed. Many older types of comics stopped being made because of these rules.

Later in his life, other people began to study his work more closely. In 2010, his personal papers were opened for researchers to see. A professor named Carol Tilley looked at his research very carefully. She found that many of his conclusions were not based on true facts.

She said he sometimes changed or made up evidence to support his ideas. He had used stories from people that did not truly represent all children. This showed that his famous ideas might not have been scientifically correct.

Even with these mistakes, Wertham's life remains a big part of history. You can see his impact in how we talk about media today. Some people even made funny versions of him in comic books. He died on November 18, 1981, in Pennsylvania at age 86.

His story shows how one person's ideas can change an entire industry. It also shows why it is important for scientists to use true facts. His papers are still kept at the Library of Congress for people to study.
