Kanner discovered autism by watching how certain children acted. In 1943, he published a famous paper called "Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact." He studied eleven children, including eight boys and three girls. He noticed they all shared some special traits. They had a powerful desire to be alone. They also had an obsessive insistence on sameness. This means they wanted things to stay exactly the same all the time. Kanner called this "early infantile autism."
