society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The Frankfurt School is a famous group of thinkers. They studied how people live together in a society. These people worked at the Institute for Social Research. This institute was part of a university in Germany. They wanted to understand why the world can be unfair. They looked at how politics and money affect our lives. Their goal was to help people become truly free.

These thinkers used a special way of studying called critical theory. This theory is not just about watching things happen. It is about looking deeply at how power works. They wanted to find out if the stories told by leaders are true. Sometimes, the way a society is run can hide the real truth. They used ideas from many different subjects to help them. They combined social science with deep philosophy. This helped them see patterns in how humans act.

The school began in Germany many years ago. A man named Carl Grünberg helped start the institute in 1923. A wealthy student named Felix Weil provided the money to fund it. Before the institute was official, Weil held a special meeting in 1922. This meeting helped bring different ideas together. The institute became a permanent part of the University of Frankfurt. It was the first center for this kind of research at a German university.

Many important people were part of the Frankfurt School. Max Horkheimer became the director in 1930. He worked with Theodor Adorno, who studied music and philosophy. Other members included Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse. The group faced hard times during the 1930s. As Nazism grew in Germany, the scholars had to leave. They moved to Geneva and then to New York City. They even joined Columbia University for a while.

After many years, the school returned to its home. In 1953, the institute was set up again in West Germany. Some members stayed in the United States while others went back. The ideas of the Frankfurt School still matter today. They teach us to ask difficult questions about our world. They show us that studying history can help us build a better future. We can learn from their work to understand our own society better.
