These thinkers wanted to understand the world. They studied how people live and how they are treated. They used a way of thinking called critical theory. This theory looks at how society works. It tries to find ways to make people free. They looked at many ideas to help them. They used ideas from Marxism and science.

During the 1930s, things became hard in Germany. The rise of Nazism was a big problem. Because of this, the group had to leave. They moved to Geneva and then to New York City. They worked at Columbia University for a time. Later, some members went back to West Germany. In 1953, the school opened again in Frankfurt. Many famous people were part of this group. These people included Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno. Their work helps us think about our world today.
