Frank Plumpton Ramsey was a brilliant thinker who studied many different subjects. He worked in math, philosophy, and economics all at once. He was born in Cambridge on February 22, 1903. His father, Arthur Stanley Ramsey, was a mathematician too. Frank was the oldest of four children. His brother, Michael Ramsey, later became the Archbishop of Canterbury. Frank went to Winchester College starting in 1915. Later, he studied math at Trinity College in Cambridge.

Ramsey had a special way of looking at the world. He found that even in messy or random groups, patterns always appear. He proved this in a 1928 paper about formal logic. This discovery is now called Ramsey's theorem. It started a whole new branch of math called Ramsey theory. This math studies how order must exist in large systems. He also worked on a simpler way to organize mathematical ideas. This was called the Theory of Simple Types.

Frank was a very important friend to the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. They spent a lot of time having long, deep conversations. At age 19, Ramsey translated a difficult German book into English. This book was called the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Ramsey even traveled to Austria to talk to Wittgenstein in person. He helped persuade Wittgenstein to return to teaching at Cambridge. Their many talks helped Wittgenstein find mistakes in his own work.

Ramsey also made huge discoveries in the study of money. He wrote three important papers between 1926 and 1928. These papers looked at taxes and how economies grow. He also wrote about how people make choices using probability. The economist Paul Samuelson later called these papers great legacies. Many years passed before everyone realized how important they were. Ramsey held a job as a math lecturer at King's College.

Even though he was very smart, Ramsey was known to be modest. He was a person who loved many different interests. He was also a militant atheist, which meant he did not believe in gods. He married a woman named Lettice Baker in 1925. They had two daughters together. Sadly, Ramsey died very young on January 19, 1930. He was only 26 years old when he passed away. He died at Guy's Hospital in London from liver problems.
