Francesco Redi was a famous scientist from Italy.

He was a doctor and a biologist. He studied how living things grow and change.

Redi is best known for his work with insects.

Back then, people believed in spontaneous generation. This was the idea that life just appeared from nothing. They thought maggots grew from rotting meat. Redi did not believe this. He used a special way to test it. He used a control, which is a part of an experiment used for comparison.

He put meat in jars. Some jars were left open. Flies could land on the meat. Maggots appeared in those jars. Other jars were covered with thin gauze. This cloth let air in but kept flies out. No maggots grew on that meat. Redi showed that maggots come from fly eggs.

Redi also studied snakes. He found that venom comes from fangs. He also studied many parasites, which are tiny living things that live inside others. He described about 180 kinds of these pests. Redi was also a talented poet.
