Francesco Redi was a famous Italian scientist who lived a long time ago.

He was a doctor, a naturalist, and a biologist. He is often called the founder of experimental biology. He was also known as the father of modern parasitology. Redi was a very curious man who liked to find the truth. He wanted to prove that many old stories about nature were not true.

One of Redi's biggest jobs was testing a theory called spontaneous generation. At that time, people thought maggots just appeared from rotting meat.

Redi wanted to see if this was real. He used six jars to test his idea. He put meat in some jars and left others open. He covered some jars with fine gauze, which is a thin cloth. This cloth let air in but kept flies out. Maggots only appeared in the jars where flies could land. This showed that maggots come from fly eggs, not from the meat itself.

Redi also studied how snakes work. Many people believed that vipers drank wine and could break glass. They also thought snake venom came from the gallbladder. Redi did experiments to find the truth about these things. He showed that venom is actually a yellow fluid inside the fangs. He discovered that venom is only dangerous when it enters the bloodstream through a bite. He even showed that a tight bandage could help stop venom from reaching the heart.

Redi was born in Arezzo on 18 February 1626. He studied at the University of Pisa and earned two degrees by age 21. He worked in many Italian cities like Rome, Naples, and Venice. Later, he lived in Florence and worked for the Medici Court. He was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and the Accademia del Cimento. In 1668, he published his most famous book about insects. He died in his sleep on 1 March 1697 in Pisa.

Redi was not just a man of science. He was also a very talented poet. He wrote a famous poem called Bacco in Toscana in 1685. This poem was about the wines of Tuscany. He even received a medal of honour for his writing. Today, we still remember him in many ways. There is a crater on Mars named after him. Scientists also use his name for certain types of tiny parasites and even a scientific journal.
