He is best known for his writing in France. Villon was born in Paris around 1431. He was a student of arts for many years. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1449. Later, he received a master's degree in 1452.

His life was full of both learning and trouble. He often wrote about the things he saw and did. His poems help us understand what life was like in old Paris.

Much of Villon's writing came from his own life. He wrote two very important collections of poems. One is called Le Petit Testament, or "The Smaller Testament."

He wrote this in late 1456. The other is his greatest work, Le Grand Testament. This long poem was written between 1461 and 1462. He also wrote sixteen shorter poems. Some of these poems are serious while others are light-hearted. He even used the slang of thieves in some of his writing.

Villon's life was quite difficult and often involved the law. In 1455, he was involved in a fight where a man died. This led to him being sent away from the city. Later, he was linked to a robbery at the Collège de Navarre. This robbery happened around Christmas in 1456. The thieves took five hundred gold crowns from a chapel. Villon spent many years as a wanderer after these events. He may have even been part of a gang of thieves.

Villon faced many more hard times in Paris. In 1461, he spent time in a prison at Meung-sur-Loire. He was later imprisoned in the Grand Châtelet fortress. This was a large building in Paris. He was even sentenced to death after a street quarrel. However, the court changed his sentence to banishment in 1463. No one knows for sure what happened to him after that. He simply disappeared from the historical records.

Today, people still study and enjoy Villon's clever poems. He was a great innovator in the world of poetry. He used jokes, puns, and many private meanings. He often wrote about poor people instead of rich ones. Many famous writers have translated his work into English. For example, George Heyer published a translation in 1924. One of his most famous lines is about the "snows of yesteryear." This line is still known by many people today.
