Francesco Grimaldi was a leader from Genoa. He lived a long time ago in Italy. At that time, two groups fought for power. One group was the Guelphs. The other group was the Ghibellines. Francesco led the Guelph group.

In 1297, Francesco had a clever plan. He wanted to take a place called Monaco. This place is a large rock by the sea. On January 8, he dressed as a monk. This was a man in a simple robe. He and his cousin, Rainier, went to the castle. They used their disguise to get inside. Then, they took control of the castle.

This plan is shown on the coat of arms of Monaco. It shows two monks holding swords. The Grimaldi family wanted this land for trade. They wanted to move goods by sea. This helped the family stay rich for many years.

Francesco did not rule Monaco for long. He died in 1309. His cousin Rainier I took over. Later, the family bought Monaco for good. They became the official rulers of the rock. The Grimaldi family still rules Monaco today.
