language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Fluency is how we use language. It means speech is smooth and easy. It also means we can use language well.

When we speak fluently, we do not have to think hard. We can use words without stopping. This is called automaticity. It means our brain works without us even noticing. People use fluency to share ideas quickly. We can also use it to be understood by others.

There are different kinds of fluency. Reading fluency helps us read words fast and well. This helps us understand a story. Oral fluency is about speaking. It is how we talk and listen in a chat. Oral reading fluency is a special skill. It is reading out loud with good tone and rhythm.

Writing fluency is also a thing. We can measure it by how many words a person writes. Fluency can also mean being creative. In creative thinking, fluency is the ability to think of many ideas fast.

Sometimes, speech is not smooth. This is called a fluency disorder. It can include stuttering or cluttering. These can make speech have breaks or repeats.
