Speech disorder

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Talking is a complex way to share ideas. It needs the brain and muscles to work well together. Sometimes, this process does not work correctly. We call these speech disorders.

Some people have trouble making specific sounds. This is called an articulation disorder. Others might have trouble using all sounds to make words. This is a phonological disorder. Some people talk with a fast rate. This is called cluttering. It can make them hard to understand.

Other disorders affect how sounds are moved. Apraxia of speech happens when the brain has trouble with speech paths. A person might say "topato" instead of "potato." Dysarthria is when speech muscles are weak or cannot move. This can happen from a stroke or an injury.

Speech disorders affect many people. In the US, about 11.5% of people have one. Many children get help at school. They can work with a speech-language pathologist. This person is a specialist who helps people talk better. This help is called speech therapy.

Speech helps us make friends and learn. It is important for school and social life.
