Floral design is the wonderful art of using plants and flowers to create beautiful displays.

Designers work to make arrangements that look balanced and catch the eye. This art is different from floristry, which includes growing or selling flowers. Floral design focuses only on the creative part of making the display. People make many different things, such as wreaths, bouquets, or garlands.

Some arrangements are even worn, like a small nosegay or a boutonniere on a jacket.

To make a great arrangement, artists follow seven special principles. They use proportion to make sure the sizes of the flowers and the vase look right together. They also think about scale, which is how the art fits its setting. Balance is very important so the display does not fall over.

Designers also create a focal point to draw your eye to one spot. Rhythm helps your gaze move through the design using colors and shapes. Finally, harmony and unity make sure everything looks like it belongs together.

This art has a very long and interesting history. Nearly 4,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians placed lotus flowers and buds in vases. They also made beautiful flower collars and wreaths. In Asia, Japanese Ikebana uses lines to represent heaven, humans, and the earth.

During the Renaissance in Europe, designs were often bright and shaped like triangles or arches. In the Americas, people in the Colonial Period used simple wildflowers and grasses. Over time, these styles changed and mixed to create the art we see today.

Modern designers use many different styles to express themselves. Some like the Garden Style, which uses things like a compote or an armature. Others might use a Parallel System or a Western Line style.

Some artists create abstract designs that do not follow old rules at all. Other designers prefer to keep things natural and untreated. This means modern art can range from very simple to totally abstract. There are even specific styles like the Hedgerow Design or the Mille de Fleur.

Artists use different types of flowers to build their work. Line flowers, like snapdragons, create the tall shape of the design. Form flowers, such as orchids, have unique patterns that act as a focal point.

Mass flowers, like roses, have one big head and add weight to the display. Finally, filler flowers like baby's breath fill in the empty spaces. Even the green leaves, called foliage, help by adding texture and hiding the tools used to hold the stems.
