A flattop is a classic short hairstyle for men and boys. It has short hair on the sides and back. The hair on top stands upright in a flat, level plane.

This look is very neat and tidy. Some people like the hair to look boxy with sharp corners. Others prefer rounded corners on the upper sides. The shape can change based on the person's head or hair thickness. It is a style that many people find very striking.

Barbers use special tools to make this precise shape. They often use electric clippers to cut the hair. One way is the clipper-over-comb method. This means the barber holds a comb against the head and runs clippers up it. This helps the barber "box in" the sides instead of following the head's curve.

For the very top, they might use freehand cutting. Master barbers also use shears, which are sharp scissors, at the end. They do this to remove stray hairs in a "scissor salute."

Keeping a flattop neat is a big job. Because the hair is so short, it grows out quickly. This means people need a haircut every two to three weeks. Some people even go to the barber every single week. Many people visit on Fridays for "Flattop Friday."

To keep the hair standing up, people use styling products. They might use hair spray, gel, mousse, or cream. In the 1950s, people used a wax called butch wax. Some people with coarse hair do not need any product at all.

There are many different versions of this haircut. Some people wear a version called "fenders." This style has long sides that are slicked back into a ducktail. Soldiers in the U.S. military sometimes wear a "horseshoe flattop." This version is shaved very close to the skin on the back and sides. It leaves hair on top that looks like a horseshoe shape.

Some people even have a "landing strip." This is a small area where the scalp shows through the top. The name comes from the flat deck on an aircraft carrier ship.

This hairstyle has a long history in many places. It was very popular during the early and mid-20th century. People have worn it through many different decades. Famous people like baseball player Roger Maris have worn it too.

Even leaders like President John F. Kennedy had similar short styles. While styles change over time, many people still love the flattop today. It remains a classic way for people to show their style.
