Filtration

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Filtration is a way to separate solid matter from a fluid. A fluid can be a liquid or a gas.

This process uses a filter medium to do the work. The medium has a complex structure with tiny paths. Only the fluid can pass through these paths. We call the fluid that passes through the filtrate. The solid bits that are too large to pass are called oversize particles.

Sometimes these particles form a layer on top called a filter cake. If the particles block the paths, it is called blinding.

How does the fluid move through the filter? It needs a driving force to make it flow. Gravity is one way to move a fluid. You can see this when you use a simple coffee maker. Scientists also use a vacuum to pull fluid through. A vacuum creates low pressure on one side of the filter. Another way is to use a pump to push the fluid.

Some machines use centrifugal force by spinning the mixture very fast. This force is much stronger than gravity. Moving fluid always travels from high pressure to low pressure.

Scientists use different methods in a laboratory. Hot filtration is used to separate solids from a hot solution. This method keeps the solution warm so crystals do not form in the funnel.

Using a stemless funnel can help prevent these crystals from forming. Cold filtration is another way to work with solutions. This method uses an ice bath to cool a solution quickly. Cooling it fast helps make very small crystals. Vacuum filtration is often used to dry small crystals very quickly.

There are two main types of filter media used in labs. Surface filters use a mesh to trap particles on the top. These can be things like a screen or a belt filter. Depth filters use beds of granular material like sand. These particles get trapped as they move through the material.

Depth filters are less likely to clog because they have more space. Some people add filter aids to help the process. They might use kieselguhr or wood cellulose. These aids can prevent the filter from plugging up.

Filtration is happening all around us in nature and industry. Many animals are called filter feeders. The basking shark and baleen whales use this to eat. Even tiny organisms like Vorticella filter food from their world.

In our bodies, our kidneys use renal filtration to remove waste from blood. We also use filtration to clean water in sewage plants. Even at home, you use it when you strain pasta.
