Filtration

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Filtration is a way to separate solids from a fluid. A fluid can be a liquid or a gas.

To do this, we use a filter medium. This is a material with tiny holes or paths. The fluid passes through the filter. We call the clean fluid the filtrate.

The solid bits that are too big are called oversize particles. These bits stay behind. Sometimes, they pile up on top. This pile is called a filter cake. If the bits block the holes, it is called blinding.

There are different ways to make the fluid move. Gravity can pull the fluid down. This is how a coffee maker works. We can also use a vacuum to pull it through. Some people use a pump to push it.

In a lab, scientists use special steps. Hot filtration helps separate solids from a hot liquid. This stops crystals from forming in the funnel. Cold filtration uses an ice bath to make small crystals. This is a very useful tool for science and nature.
