The story follows a specific path of discovery and change. The narrator meets Tyler on a business flight. After an explosion destroys the narrator's apartment, he moves into Tyler's old house. They start their club in the basement of a bar. As the club grows, it turns into a group called Project Mayhem. This group starts doing things to disrupt the normal order of society. The narrator eventually learns a huge secret about himself. He discovers that he and Tyler are actually two different personalities in one person.

Making this film was a long and careful process. It started with a book written by Chuck Palahniuk in 1996. A producer named Laura Ziskin bought the rights for $10,000. She hired Jim Uhls to write the script for the movie. Director David Fincher was chosen because he was very excited about the story. He worked closely with the writers and the actors to get it right. The filming took place in and around Los Angeles. This happened from July to December in 1998.

Many people remember the specific details and stars of the film. The movie stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. Other actors include Meat Loaf as Bob and Jared Leto as Angel Face. The film premiered at the 56th Venice International Film Festival on September 10, 1999. It was released in the United States by 20th Century Fox on October 15, 1999. Even though the studio was worried about it, the movie became very famous. It is known as a "cult classic" because it has such dedicated fans.

Fight Club connects to other famous stories and big ideas. The director compared it to movies like The Graduate from 1967. It also looks at themes found in the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause. The movie talks about how advertising tries to tell people how to be happy. It uses things like IKEA furniture and Volkswagen cars to show this. Some people see it as a story about growing up. Others see it as a way to look at how we treat each other. It remains a very talked-about movie today.
