He calls his style "transgressional fiction." This means his stories often push boundaries. He has written 19 novels and three nonfiction books. He also makes graphic novels and adult coloring books. His work often looks at big ideas like death and morality. He wants his readers to think deeply about the world. Many people find his stories very powerful and unique.

His writing style uses a method called minimalism. This means he uses short sentences and a limited vocabulary. He tries to mimic how a normal person tells a story. Palahniuk says he prefers to write using verbs instead of adjectives. He also uses "choruses," which are lines that repeat in his stories. He sometimes uses "burnt tongue," which is a way of using odd wording. These tools help make his writing feel very direct and real.

Before he was a famous author, Palahniuk had many different jobs. He grew up in a mobile home in Burbank, Washington. He attended the University of Oregon and studied journalism. After college, he worked as a diesel mechanic for Freightliner Trucks. While fixing trucks, he wrote manuals on how to repair them. He also worked as a journalist for a short time. He eventually quit his job to focus on his writing career.

Writing became his main focus in his early 30s. He attended workshops led by a writer named Tom Spanbauer. Spanbauer helped teach him his minimalist style. Palahniuk's first novel was called Invisible Monsters, but publishers rejected it. He then wrote his first big hit, Fight Club. This story was first published as a short story in 1995. Later, it became a very famous novel and a major movie. He also wrote books like Survivor, Choke, and Lullaby.

Many of his stories have moved from the page to the screen. The movie version of Fight Club came out in 1999. His book Choke was also made into a film. Some of his stories have even been turned into graphic novels. He even worked on a musical version of Fight Club. His books have reached many people through different types of media. Even when stories are hard, he uses them to explore the human experience.
