Cheryl Strayed is a famous American writer and podcast host. She is well known for sharing stories about life and big feelings. Many people love her books because she writes about real struggles. She has written four main books. One is a novel called Torch, which came out in 2006. Another is a memoir called Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. This book tells the story of her long hike in 1995. It became a huge success all over the world.

Strayed's writing often follows her own life experiences. She writes about her mother's death from lung cancer in 1991. She calls this loss her "genesis story." She also writes about her time using heroin in her twenties. One special way she helps people is through her advice column. It is called "Dear Sugar." She started writing it in March 2010 on a website called The Rumpus. For a long time, she wrote it without using her real name. She finally revealed her identity at a party in San Francisco in 2012.

Her life has taken her to many different places. She was born in Spangler, Pennsylvania, in 1968. Later, her family moved to Chaska, Minnesota. They even lived in a house they built themselves in Aitkin County. This house did not have electricity or running water at first. Strayed went to college at the University of Minnesota. She studied English and Women's Studies there. Later, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University.

Strayed has achieved many great things in her career. Her book Wild reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. It stayed there for seven weeks in a row. The book was even translated into 37 different languages. In 2014, a movie called Wild was made about her hike. The film starred Reese Witherspoon and earned Academy Award nominations. Strayed also hosts podcasts like Sugar Calling. This show began in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, Strayed lives in east Portland, Oregon. She is very active in helping others through her words. She has worked as a political organizer and an emergency medical technician. She also teaches writing workshops in places like Nepal. In 2019, she was honored with a statue in New York. This was part of a project called Statues for Equality. This project helps show more women in public art. Strayed continues to travel and speak about her life.
