Mary Oliver was a famous American poet who loved the natural world.

She used clear and simple words to share her ideas. Her writing helped people feel wonder about the earth. Many people found her poems easy to read and understand. In 2007, she was the best-selling poet in the United States. She wanted her poetry to speak for itself.

Writing was a way for Oliver to connect with nature. She went on long, solitary walks in the wild. She looked closely at shore birds and water snakes. She even watched humpback whales in the sea. To stay ready, she often hid pencils in trees.

She also carried a small, hand-sewn notebook to record her thoughts. This helped her catch ideas whenever they arrived.

Oliver was born on September 10, 1935, in Maple Heights, Ohio.

Her father was a teacher and a coach. Growing up in Ohio was a very hard time for her. However, writing helped her create her own world. She began writing poetry when she was only 14 years old. In 1951, she played percussion in a music camp in Michigan. Later, she worked at the home of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Her career was filled with many great successes and honors.

In 1984, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her book, American Primitive. She also won the National Book Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems. Oliver taught at several places, like Case Western Reserve University and Bennington College. She lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts, for many years. There, she lived with her partner, Molly Malone Cook. They shared a home near the land and the water.

Many people compare Oliver to other famous writers. Some say she is like Walt Whitman or Henry David Thoreau. Her work is often linked to the beauty of the outdoors. She showed how the self can grow through nature. Some critics even compared her to the poet Emily Dickinson.

Even though she faced hard times, her poems stay full of joy. She lived to be 83 years old. She passed away on January 17, 2019.
