Mary Oliver was a famous American poet.

She loved the natural world. She found her best ideas on long walks. She often walked alone in the wild. She looked at shore birds and water snakes. She even watched humpback whales in the sea.

Oliver used clear and simple words. Her poems help people feel wonder at nature. She even hid pencils in trees. She did this so she could write anywhere. She often carried a small, hand-sewn notebook. This helped her record her ideas.

Her work won many big awards. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984. She also won the National Book Award in 1992. In 2007, she was the best-selling poet in the United States. Growing up in Ohio was a hard time for her. However, writing helped her create her own world. She lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts, for many years. She lived there with her partner, Molly Malone Cook. Oliver died in 2019 at the age of 83.
