Fibrobacterota

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fibrobacterota is a small group of bacteria. These tiny living things play a big role in nature. They help many animals eat plants by breaking down cellulose. Cellulose is the tough part of a plant. Without these bacteria, many animals could not use plants for food. They are very important to the way many animals stay healthy.

These bacteria work by breaking down plant fiber. This process is called degradation. In animals like cattle, these bacteria live in the rumen. The rumen is a special part of the stomach. The bacteria eat the cellulose found in the plants. This helps the animal get energy from the plant material. This same work happens in the guts of pigs too.

Scientists have studied these bacteria for many years. In 1988, researchers changed how they were named. They moved the genus Fibrobacter out of the genus Bacteroides. This helped scientists organize them better. One specific type is called Fibrobacter succinogenes. It was first described by a scientist named Hungate in 1950. Another type is Fibrobacter intestinalis, which was also named in 1988.

We can find these bacteria in many different places. Many live in the guts of mammals like cattle. Some live in the guts of termites and cockroaches. In the wood-feeding termite Nasutitermes corniger, they help break down wood. Scientists use 16S rRNA genes to find them. This helps them see how widespread the bacteria really are. They found two groups, called subphylum 1 and subphylum 2.

These bacteria are closely related to other groups. Scientists look at proteins to see how they are linked. They found special patterns in proteins like RpoC and Gyrase B. They also found a special protein called PG00081. These patterns show the groups share a common ancestor. Because of this, some call them the FCB superphylum. This group includes Bacteroidetes and Chlorobi as well.
