It is currently the largest automobile manufacturer in Italy. The company has a massive global footprint, producing vehicles in locations such as Brazil, Poland, Argentina, and Mexico. While many people know them for passenger cars, Fiat has a diverse industrial history. They have manufactured railway engines, aircraft, farm tractors, and military vehicles. They even produced weapons, such as the Fiat–Revelli Modello 1914. Today, Fiat operates as a subsidiary of the large global conglomerate known as Stellantis.

To produce such a high volume of vehicles, Fiat utilizes sophisticated manufacturing processes. A major milestone in their production method was the adoption of the assembly line.

This method was first used at the famous Lingotto factory in Italy. The Lingotto plant was a massive five-story structure built between 1915 and 1918. At the time of its opening, it was the largest car manufacturing plant in Europe. By using assembly lines, the company could organize the sequence of building parts to increase efficiency. This allowed Fiat to grow from making just 24 cars in 1900 to producing 1.4 million cars in Italy by 1970.

Fiat's product lineup is categorized into several distinct segments. Their primary focus is on city cars and superminis, which represent 84% of their sales as of 2011.

For specialized needs, they offer the 124 Spider roadster and light commercial vehicles under the Fiat Professional brand. While Fiat focuses on these smaller segments, they own other brands like Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati to cover larger luxury and family car markets.

The history of Fiat began on July 11, 1899, in Turin, Italy.

A group of founding members established the company, which was originally named Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. Giovanni Agnelli was a key figure in these early years and led the company until his death in 1945. The very first automobile produced was the Fiat 4 HP. By 1903, the company was already diversifying by producing its first truck. In 1908, Fiat achieved a major milestone by exporting its first vehicle to the United States. This same year also marked the production of their first aircraft engine.

Throughout the 20th century, Fiat experienced significant shifts in scale and ownership. In the early 1920s, the company held an 80% market share in Italy. By 1925, that control had increased to 87% of the Italian car market. During World War II, the company manufactured military machinery, including the G.55 fighter aircraft and various light tanks. Following the war, the Agnelli family left leadership due to political ties, but they eventually returned in 1963. In 2014, the company underwent a massive structural change when it merged with the Chrysler Group. This merger created Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), which later joined the PSA Group in 2021 to form Stellantis.

Fiat's economic impact is visible through impressive production figures and market dominance. In 1970, the company employed more than 100,000 people in Italy alone. By 2002, Fiat was building more than 1 million vehicles across six different Italian plants. These domestic plants were so vital that Italy accounted for more than one-third of the company's total revenue. In South America, Fiat has maintained a powerful presence for decades. In Brazil, the brand has served as a market leader for many years. They even developed specific vehicle families for that region, such as the Palio and Strada, using a common platform known as "Project 178."

Beyond simple transportation, Fiat is recognized for its engineering excellence and environmental impact. The manufacturer has earned nine European Car of the Year awards, which is more than any other manufacturer.

Additionally, the company has frequently ranked as having the lowest levels of emissions among vehicles sold in Europe. This shows how the company connects automotive engineering with environmental standards. Their history shows a constant evolution from a small workshop of 35 staff to a global leader in mobility. Whether through specialized engines or mass-market city cars, Fiat remains a central part of the global automotive system.
