The company was founded on 4 June 1919 by André Citroën. Since 2021, the brand has been owned by the Stellantis group. Its headquarters are currently located at the Stellantis Poissy Plant in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine. The company maintains several research and study offices in locations like Vélizy-Villacoublay and Sochaux-Montbéliard. Throughout its history, Citroën has focused on creating vehicles that use advanced engineering to solve common driving problems.

André Citroën’s journey into the automotive industry began with a discovery regarding mechanical gears.

While visiting Poland, he observed a carpenter using a fishbone-shaped gear structure. These gears were more efficient and produced less noise than standard designs. Citroën purchased the patent for these double helical gears for a very small amount of money. He used this knowledge to start a gear manufacturing business called "Citroën, Hinstin et Cie." This business began with only about ten workers. This early success provided the foundation for his move into automobile manufacturing.

The company's first major product was the Citroën Type A.

Following World War I, André Citroën wanted to build a light, high-quality car that was affordable for many people. He worked with engineer Louis Dufresne and others to design a 10-horsepower vehicle. The Type A was announced to the press in March 1919. By 1920, the company's factory in Paris was producing 12,244 vehicles annually. In 1919 alone, the company produced 2,810 vehicles, averaging about 30 cars every day. This rapid growth helped establish Citroën as a serious player in the global market.

Citroën is perhaps most famous for its radical approach to vehicle architecture.

In 1934, the company introduced the Traction Avant, a car that changed automotive engineering. Most cars at the time used a heavy ladder frame and rear-wheel drive. The Traction Avant used unibody construction, which means the car's body acts as its own load-bearing structure. It also featured front-wheel drive and four-wheel independent suspension. These three features are still common in modern cars today. However, the massive cost of developing this technology led Citroën to file for bankruptcy in December 1934. The Michelin company subsequently became the principal shareholder to save the firm.

During the mid-20th century, Citroën continued to release vehicles with unique mechanical systems.

In 1954, the company produced the first hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension system. This technology helped the car maintain a steady height. In 1955, they released the DS, which was the first mass-produced car to use modern disc brakes.

In 1967, Citroën introduced swiveling headlights to help drivers see better on winding roads. These technological leaps earned the brand several European Car of the Year awards. This commitment to "avant-garde" or radical design created very strong brand loyalty among customers.

Citroën also made significant contributions to military and off-road technology.

Between 1921 and 1937, the company produced half-track vehicles using the Kégresse track system. These vehicles were designed for difficult terrain and military use. The United States Army evaluated these vehicles and eventually produced more than 41,000 versions of the M2 and M3 half-tracks between 1940 and 1944. To prove the toughness of their vehicles, Citroën sponsored major expeditions across Asia, North America, and Africa. They even used the Eiffel Tower as a massive advertising billboard from 1925 to 1934.

Unveiled in 1948, this small car was designed to provide rural French citizens with a motorized alternative to the horse. It featured a very soft, interconnected suspension system. The car was designed to be inexpensive to purchase and inexpensive to run. Because of its utility and low cost, it became a massive success. Citroën produced 9 million variants of the 2CV between 1948 and 1990. This model helped cement Citroën's place in the daily lives of millions of people.
