He was born on April 28, 1916, in Renazzo, Italy. His parents were grape farmers named Antonio and Evelina. As a young man, he loved how machines worked. He studied at a technical institute near Bologna. He even served as a mechanic in the Italian Royal Air Force.

During the war, he worked on many different vehicles. This gave him the skills to start his own businesses later.

After the war, Lamborghini began making tractors for farmers.

He bought old military vehicles and turned them into farm machines. He created the "Carioca" tractor using parts from Morris trucks. Petrol was very expensive in Italy at that time. To help, he made a special tool called a fuel atomiser. This tool let the engines use much cheaper diesel fuel. Because of this clever idea, his company, Lamborghini Trattori, became very successful.

Lamborghini also loved fast and expensive cars. He owned many, including brands like Alfa Romeo and Maserati. He eventually bought a Ferrari 250 GT. However, he was not happy with how the Ferrari worked. He thought the clutches were not good enough. He also felt the cars were too noisy for driving on roads.

He wanted a car that was fast but also smooth and comfortable.

One famous story explains why he started making his own cars.

Lamborghini went to tell Enzo Ferrari about his problems with the car. Ferrari was very angry and told him he only knew how to drive tractors. This exchange motivated Lamborghini to build the perfect sports car. In 1963, he founded Automobili Lamborghini in Sant'Agata Bolognese. He wanted to make a high-end car that was better than what he already owned. This led to the creation of famous luxury sports cars.

Later in life, his businesses faced some hard jobs.

In the 1970s, his companies ran into money troubles. In 1971, a big order for tractors was cancelled in South Africa. In 1972, he sold his tractor company to a rival named SAME. He also sold his car company after the 1973 oil crisis made sales difficult. Eventually, he retired to a large estate in Umbria. There, he spent his time making wine, just like his parents did.
