In the past, museums mostly showed art by men. Women felt this was not fair. They wanted to tell their own stories through art.

Some artists used new ways to work. They used soft materials like cloth. They used sewing, weaving, and clay. This helped show that these crafts are important.

One artist named Judy Chicago made a famous work. It was called "The Dinner Party." It had a large triangular table. There were 39 place settings for famous women. Each setting had a hand-painted plate. It also had a napkin with gold edges.

In the 1980s, the movement grew. Artists looked at how women were shown in media. They used photos and collage to explore identity. Some groups, like the Guerrilla Girls, fought for change. They wanted museums to show more women and people of color. This movement spread all over the world. It helped make the art world a more fair place.
