FedEx Corporation is a massive American multinational conglomerate. A conglomerate is a large company made of many smaller companies. FedEx specializes in transportation, e-commerce, and business services. It manages a complex network of subsidiaries to move goods globally. The company is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. Most of its air shipping is centralized at the Memphis International Airport. This location serves as a critical hub for global logistics.

The company's operations rely on a highly organized system of delivery. FedEx Express provides fast, time-definite international and overnight courier services. This unit operates one of the largest civil aircraft fleets in the world. It even holds the largest fleet of wide-bodied civil aircraft.

FedEx Ground handles day-definite package delivery. It serves commercial locations in the US and Canada. It also serves residential locations in Canada. This service is often cheaper than the express options.

FedEx has grown through many strategic acquisitions. In 1988, it bought Flying Tiger Line to become a massive cargo airline. In 1997, it reorganized as a holding company called FDX Corporation. This allowed it to oversee many different specialized businesses. In 1998, it acquired Caliber System Inc. This purchase allowed FedEx to offer services beyond express shipping. For example, it gained small-package ground services and regional freight carriers.

In 2000, the company rebranded all these subsidiaries under the FedEx name. It also acquired Tower Group International to build its trade networks.

Retail access was another major goal for the company. In 2004, FedEx acquired the company Kinko's, Inc. This became known as FedEx Kinko's for a few years. Later, in 2008, the name was changed to FedEx Office. This unit provides printing, photocopying, and marketing services. It also offers retail shipping and package pickup locations.

To expand in Europe, FedEx bought TNT Express in 2015. This acquisition cost approximately $4.8 billion. This helped the company reach over two hundred countries.

The history of FedEx began with a single bold idea. Frederick W. Smith founded the company in 1971 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a graduate of Yale University. He actually wrote the concept for the company in a Yale term paper. He proposed a system designed specifically for urgent deliveries. His professor did not believe the idea would work. However, Smith moved operations to Memphis in 1973. He chose Memphis because it was near the country's mean population center. He also liked the placid, or calm, weather in the area.

FedEx's growth has been remarkably fast and steady. By 1983, the company reached one billion dollars in revenue. This was very rare for a startup company. It achieved this without any mergers or acquisitions in its first decade. The company continues to manage a massive fleet of vehicles. It operates over 210,000 motorized vehicles to move goods. These include planes, trucks, vans, and even drones.

This massive scale helps the company compete with its primary rival, UPS.

Today, FedEx is involved in many different economic systems. It connects e-commerce platforms to individual customers. For instance, it once held an $850 million contract with Amazon. In 2020, it also acquired ShopRunner, an e-commerce platform. The company is also looking toward the future of its structure. In late 2024, FedEx announced a major corporate restructuring. It plans to spin off its freight truck division by 2026. This new company will keep the FedEx Freight name. This move will allow the different parts of the business to operate independently.
