The false killer whale is a large oceanic dolphin.

It is the fourth-largest dolphin in the sea. Only the orca and two types of pilot whales are bigger. These animals live in warm, tropical, and subtropical waters. They mostly stay in the open ocean and deep areas. They usually do not swim further north or south than 50 degrees.

These dolphins are very social and live in groups called pods. Most pods have between 10 and 20 members. Some huge groups can even have more than 500 whales!

They often form close bonds with other species. They sometimes swim in mixed groups with common bottlenose dolphins. They may even help other species during childbirth. This social nature can lead to mass strandings where many whales beach themselves. One large group of over 800 whales stranded in Argentina in 1946.

Finding food is a big part of their daily life. They use echolocation to find prey in the dark. Echolocation is a way of using sound to see. They use a part in their forehead called a melon to make these sounds. They mostly eat fish and squid during the day. They like to hunt large fish like tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. Sometimes they even hunt other marine mammals like smaller dolphins.

Scientists have a long history of studying these whales. A biologist named Richard Owen first described them in 1846. He used a fossil skull found in England to do this. The name "false killer whale" comes from their skull shape. It looks very similar to the skull of an orca. For a long time, people thought they were extinct. This changed in 1861 when carcasses were found in Denmark. A scientist named Johannes Theodor Reinhardt then gave them their own name.

False killer whales can grow to be quite large. Females can reach 6 meters in length. Males are often 10 to 15 percent larger than females. They can live for many years in the wild. In aquariums, females have lived up to 62 years.

Humans can sometimes cause problems for these animals. They can get caught in fishing gear or swallow hooks. In Hawaii, these problems helped reduce the population by 75 percent between 1989 and 2009. We learn a lot about them by studying those that strand on beaches.
