The band works through a special way of making music. Pete Wentz is the main person who writes the lyrics. Lyrics are the words that the singer says. Patrick Stump is the main composer. This means he writes the melodies or the tunes. They used to have different members in the beginning. The band felt different once Andy Hurley joined on drums. He filled in for other drummers during a recording session. This moment felt like a big discovery for the group.

In the early years, the band was just a side project. Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman wanted to make music that was easy and fun. They met Patrick Stump at a bookstore in Wilmette. At first, Patrick wanted to be the drummer. Joe asked him to play his acoustic guitar instead. They also used the name "Forget Me Not" at first. They chose the name "Fall Out Boy" after friends voted on it.
