The fall armyworm is a type of moth that can cause big problems for farmers.

Its scientific name is Spodoptera frugiperda. This name comes from Latin words meaning "lost fruit." This is because the insect can destroy many crops. The young larvae act like a large army when they move. They eat many different things, including over 80 kinds of plants. They especially love to eat corn and grasses.

This behavior causes huge economic damage around the world.

The life of this insect has many steps. It begins when a female lays dome-shaped eggs on the underside of leaves. In warm weather, these eggs hatch into larvae in just a few days.

These larvae go through six growth stages called instars. As they grow, they turn brown with white lines and dark spots. The larvae have biting mouth parts to eat plants. They also practice cannibalism, which means they eat other larvae. This can happen when food is hard to find. After growing, they pupate underground in a cocoon made of soil and silk.

Eventually, an adult moth emerges to fly and find nectar.

Scientists have studied this moth for a long time. They want to find ways to protect crops from the damage it causes. One interesting thing they study is how the species is changing. It seems to be splitting into two different species. This is a special process called sympatric speciation. Researchers also look at how the larvae eat each other. They found that eating other larvae can actually spread diseases. However, it also removes competitors for food. This helps the surviving larvae have more to eat.

This moth lives in many different places. It is native to eastern and central North America and South America.

It cannot survive freezing winter temperatures. Because of this, it stays in places like Texas and Florida during the winter. The moths can fly very fast to move north. They have been found in 28 African countries. In 2013, it was first found in Africa in Sao Tome. It later spread to places like Nigeria and Ghana. In 2018, it was seen in Bangladesh and India. It also reached China in 2019, where it hit 26 provinces.

You can see how this moth connects to the world around you. Many animals act as natural enemies to the fall armyworm. Birds, rodents, and beetles all eat the caterpillars. There are also tiny wasps called parasitoids that attack them. Some people even use a special fungus to fight the pests. An Australian scientist named Georgia Rodger found a fungus called Nomuraea rileyi. This fungus can kill the armyworms in corn crops. Even the plants try to fight back. Some corn has a special protein that makes it hard for the larvae to grow.
