The Falkland Islands wolf was a special animal. It was the only land mammal that lived on the Falkland Islands.

This animal had tawny fur. It also had a white tip on its tail.

Scientists study the wolf's DNA to find its relatives. They found its closest living relative is the maned wolf. The maned wolf is a fox-like animal from South America. The two types of wolves split apart a long time ago.

How did the wolf get to the islands? The islands were never joined to the mainland. Some think the wolves crossed an ice bridge during the Ice Age. This is a path made of ice. Others think people brought them to the islands long ago.

Sadly, the wolf is now extinct. This means they are all gone. People hunted them for their fur. Some settlers also saw them as a threat to sheep. By 1876, the last wolves were gone. Today, we only have about a dozen museum specimens to study.
