One idea is that an ice bridge formed during the last Ice Age. The sea was much shallower back then. This might have allowed a narrow path of ice to connect the lands. Another idea is that people brought the wolves to the islands. They might have been domesticated animals brought by early visitors. Some researchers think the wolves arrived within the last ten thousand years. This would mean they traveled across the ocean somehow.

Many famous people studied these wolves in the past. Captain John Strong saw one in 1690. He actually took one on his ship, but it jumped overboard.

The famous scientist Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1833. He saw the wolves on both West and East Falkland. Darwin noticed they were quite tame and not afraid of people. He even thought they might be different versions of the same animal. Darwin predicted they would go extinct very soon. He compared them to the dodo bird, which was also gone.

There are many important facts about the wolf's history. It became extinct in the year 1876.

People hunted them because their fur was very valuable. Some settlers also thought the wolves were a threat to their sheep. This was likely a mistake. The sheep often mistook the wolves for dogs at night. This made the sheep run into scary swamps and bogs. By 1865, the wolves were already gone from the eastern part of East Falkland. Today, only about a dozen museum specimens still exist for us to see.

This animal was an endemic species, meaning it could not be found anywhere else in the world. It had tawny-colored fur and a white tip on its tail. Although it was a canid, its exact diet remains a mystery to scientists. Because there were no native rodents on the islands, it likely practiced seashore scavenging. It probably ate insects, seal pups, and ground-nesting birds like penguins or geese.

Scientists have worked hard to understand the wolf's family tree through DNA analysis. For a long time, researchers thought it was closely related to the genus Lycalopex. However, a 2009 cladistic analysis changed this understanding. This study used DNA to identify the maned wolf as its closest living relative. The maned wolf is a fox-like canid from South America known for its very long legs.

The lineage of the maned wolf and the Falkland Islands wolf separated about 6.7 million years ago. This separation occurred in North America before canids even arrived in South America. This movement happened during the Great American Biotic Interchange when the Isthmus of Panama connected the two continents.

The wolf also had a very close relative called Dusicyon avus. This mainland ancestor lived in southern South America until about 400 years ago. Genetic evidence suggests the Falkland Islands wolf diverged from Dusicyon avus only 16,000 years ago. This timing aligns with the last glacial phase of the Ice Age.

One theory is that an ice bridge allowed the wolves to cross to the islands. While there was never a true land bridge, there were submarine terraces on the Argentine coastal shelf. These terraces show that the sea was much shallower in the past. A narrow strait of only 20 km might have frozen completely, creating a path for the animals.

Another theory explores how the wolves arrived on the remote islands. Some researchers suggest the ancestors of the wolf might have been domesticated. They believe indigenous South Americans may have brought them to the islands before European settlers arrived. This would explain how a land mammal reached such an isolated place. The oldest known remains of the wolf were found at Spring Point Farm in West Falkland. These subfossil bones date back between 3,396 and 3,752 years.

Finding these bones is rare because the acidic peaty soil of the islands degrades them quickly.

History records several early encounters with the warrah. Captain John Strong provided the first recorded sighting in 1690. He actually brought one specimen back on his ship, but it jumped overboard when frightened by cannon fire. Later, Louis Antoine de Bougainville called the animal a "loup-renard," or wolf-fox. When Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1833, he found the wolves on both West and East Falkland. He noted that the animals were quite tame and showed no fear of humans.

Darwin even observed that the wolves on the different islands might be different varieties or subspecies.

Unfortunately, the species faced rapid decline due to human activity. Settlers hunted the wolves because they wanted their valuable fur. Some people also viewed the wolves as a threat to their sheep. This was likely a misunderstanding of animal behavior. Sheep often mistook the wolves for dogs at night and ran into dangerous swamps in terror. Because there were no forests to hide in, the wolves were easy to find. They could even be lured with meat and killed with a knife.

The Falkland Islands wolf became extinct in 1876. By 1865, they had already disappeared from the eastern part of East Falkland. Some animals were even taken to England for zoos, but they did not survive long. Today, only about a dozen museum specimens remain to help us study them.
