A factory is a large place where many things are made.

These buildings often have many different structures and lots of machines inside. Workers use these machines to change one thing into something else. Most of the goods in our world come from factories today. Some factories make separate items like cars or shoes. Other factories make things that flow in a steady stream. These might be things like paper, oil, or chemicals.

Chemical factories are often called plants. They might have big tanks and pipes sitting outside.

Factories work in different ways depending on what they make. Some use an assembly line to build things step by step. In this way, a product moves along a path. Workers or machines stay in one spot to do one job. This helps make things much faster and cheaper. Other factories use heat or electricity to change raw materials. They might turn raw materials into a liquid or a powder. This is how things like refined oil are made.

Making things in large groups has a long history. In ancient times, production happened mostly in small homes. Some people think the city of Naucratis in Egypt was an early factory. In the Roman Empire, people made a sauce called garum in factories. There was even a large mill in France from the second century AD. Later, the Venice Arsenal was founded in 1104. It was a very large place that built many ships. At its peak, it used 16,000 people to make one ship almost every day.

Modern factories changed during the Industrial Revolution. Before this, machines were small enough for workshops. Then, machines became too huge to fit in a house. Richard Arkwright built Cromford Mill in England in 1769. This was a very successful cotton spinning factory. Later, factories began to use electricity around the year 1900. This happened because of the AC motor. Small motors allowed factories to be laid out in better ways.

Today, factories are very important to our daily lives. You can see their work in the toys and tools you use. Henry Ford changed how we make things in the early 1900s. He used mass production to build cars for many people. This made it easier for everyone to buy goods. Some factories even use robots to help with tasks. These robots can move things like bread onto pallets. This shows how much technology has changed how we live.
