Extreme sport

Extreme sports are activities that people see as very risky. They often involve high speeds, great heights, or deep water. People who do them usually use highly specialized gear to help. These sports can be done alone or in teams. For example, rafting and paintballing are often done with others.

Many of these activities involve natural forces that are hard to control. A surfer must deal with the shape and height of waves. A climber must watch the quality of the rock or ice. Wind, snow, and water are all variables that change the outcome. Unlike traditional sports, these environmental factors cannot be held constant. This makes the activities feel very different from a normal game.

How these sports are judged can be quite unique. In traditional sports, people use scores or times to find a winner. Extreme sports often use subjective or aesthetic criteria instead. This means judges look at the style or beauty of a move. Because of this, different sports often create their own special rules. They can change these standards as new trends or developments happen. This allows the sports to grow and evolve over time.

The history of these sports has many interesting roots. Some people link the idea to a phrase from the 1950s. That phrase suggested that true sports could even be life-threatening. A group called the Dangerous Sports Club of Oxford University helped make some activities famous. They made the first modern bungee jumps on April 1, 1979. They jumped from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. They also jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Jane Wilmot even made the first female bungee jump there.

Many extreme sports are actually connected to each other. Windsurfing was made by adding a sail to a surfboard. Kitesurfing combines kite buggying with boards used for wakeboarding. Wakeboarding itself comes from snowboarding and waterskiing. These sports have become huge industries for people seeking thrills. Marketing companies helped make the term "extreme sport" popular in the 1990s. They did this to promote events like the X Games. The first X Games were held in 1995 in the United States. These events helped bring many different activities to a large audience.

People participate in these sports for many different reasons. Some seek a rush of feeling from the intense activity. Doctors say this feeling comes from dopamine and endorphins in the brain. This happens because the body is working very hard physically. Some researchers say these experiences are like meditation. They can put a person outside of their comfort zone. Even people with disabilities participate using adaptive technologies. Organizations like Adaptive Action Sports help more people join in. This shows that these sports can be for everyone.
