An experiment is a way to learn how things work.

You can even do small tests as a child. You might test how things fall to the ground. Scientists use experiments to check a hypothesis. A hypothesis is an idea about how something happens.

To get good results, scientists use controls. A control is a part of the test that stays the same. This helps them see the effect of just one change. For example, a doctor might test a new medicine. One group gets the medicine. A control group gets a placebo, which is a fake treatment. This shows if the medicine truly works.

Many famous people used these steps. Ibn al-Haytham used tests to study light. Francis Bacon helped set the rules for the scientific method. Galileo Galilei used tests to study falling objects. Louis Pasteur used them to learn about germs. In many fields, it is important to repeat the same test. Doing it again helps make sure the results are right.
