Knievel's jumps were very carefully planned. He often jumped from one ramp to another. To make his shows more exciting, he added more obstacles. He started by jumping over cars. He would add more cars each time he returned to a venue. He even tried to jump over boxes containing rattlesnakes and mountain lions. These stunts required great skill and focus.

His journey to stardom began in Butte, Montana. He was born there on October 17, 1938. As a young boy, he watched a Joie Chitwood auto daredevil show. This event inspired his future career. Before becoming a star, he held many different jobs. He worked in copper mines and served in the U.S. Army. He even worked as an insurance salesman to support his family.

Knievel performed more than 75 major ramp-to-ramp jumps. One of his most famous attempts was at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He also tried a massive jump across the Snake River Canyon in Idaho. For that stunt on September 8, 1974, he used a rocket-powered cycle.
