She was a prominent figure during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Saint achieved high honors in her profession, including an Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. For a period, she held the distinction of being the oldest living Academy Award winner. Her work across film, television, and theater made her a versatile and respected performer in the entertainment industry.

Saint's journey into acting began with formal education and early professional roles. She attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio to study acting. During her college years, she was active in the theater honorary fraternity, Theta Alpha Phi.

After graduating in 1946, she began her career in the late 1940s working in radio and television. She served as an NBC page and appeared in live programs like Campus Hoopla. She also performed in live commercials for the show Versa-Tile Varieties. These early roles provided the foundation for her transition to the Broadway stage.

Her transition to major film stardom occurred in 1954 with the movie On the Waterfront.

In this film, she played the character Edie Doyle, acting opposite Marlon Brando. The production was a massive success, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Saint earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. She also received a BAFTA nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. For this breakout role, she earned a salary of $7,500.

Following her film debut, Saint worked with many of the most famous names in cinema. In 1957, she starred in Raintree County alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. This role earned her $100,000. That same year, she appeared in the drama A Hatful of Rain, which focused on drug addiction.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her performance in that film. Her ability to handle diverse genres allowed her to move between intense dramas and large-scale productions.

One of her most iconic roles came in the 1959 suspense classic North by Northwest.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the film featured Saint as a mysterious woman alongside Cary Grant. Hitchcock worked closely with her to develop her screen persona. He helped her make her voice lower and huskier for the role. He also personally selected her costumes during a shopping trip to Bergdorf Goodman. The film was a major box-office hit and is ranked number forty on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time.

During the 1960s, Saint balanced high-profile film roles with her personal life. She chose to limit some of her film work to spend time with her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, and their two children. Despite this, she appeared in notable films such as Exodus in 1960 with Paul Newman. She also acted in the international racing drama Grand Prix in 1966.

She also appeared in the popular television series Moonlighting during the 1980s. In 2006, she played Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Superman, in the film Superman Returns.
