The European Broadcasting Union, or EBU, is a large alliance of public media groups.

These groups work for the benefit of society rather than for profit. They aim to protect freedom of expression and the free flow of ideas. The EBU helps people seek and receive information regardless of borders. It also works to promote cultural diversity and social cohesion. By sharing stories, it helps strengthen the identity of different communities.

This group makes sure that high-quality programs reach the public.

To make this happen, the EBU uses special communication systems. It operates the Eurovision and Euroradio networks to distribute live broadcasts. These networks allow members to share television and radio content instantly. The EBU also runs a daily news exchange for breaking footage. In 2017, it launched the Eurovision Social Newswire to help members. This service, led by Derek Bowler, verifies video from social media. It ensures that the media used by members is newsworthy and cleared for use.

Creating this group took a long time and many meetings. Before the EBU, there were groups called the IBU and the IBO. These older groups often had disagreements about how to use radio frequencies. After the Second World War, leaders wanted a new way to work together. In 1949, meetings in Paris helped decide the future of broadcasting. On February 13, 1950, the EBU held its first meeting in Torquay, United Kingdom.

This new group was different because its members were broadcasters, not governments.

The EBU has grown into a massive network over many decades. It currently has 123 member organizations from 56 different countries. It also has 31 associate members from 20 other countries. These members reach from Iceland in the north to Algeria in the south. Some members include large US groups like ABC, CBS, and NBC. The EBU's headquarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland. Noel Curran has served as the director-general since 2017. Membership fees can range from 45,000 to 4,000,000 Swiss francs.

You might recognize many of the events the EBU helps produce. Its most famous production is the Eurovision Song Contest.
