Euromaidan was a major movement of protests in Ukraine. It began in November 2013 in the capital city, Kyiv. The name comes from two different words. "Euro" refers to the people's desire to work with the European Union. "Maidan" is a word for a large open square.

Most of the action happened at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square. This movement was one of the largest in Europe since 1989. It eventually became known as the Revolution of Dignity. Many people saw it as a fight for basic human rights.

The protests started for a very specific reason. President Viktor Yanukovych decided not to sign a big deal called the Association Agreement with the European Union. Instead, he chose to have closer ties with Russia.

Many people in Ukraine were unhappy with this sudden change. They also felt the government was acting in a corrupt way. Protesters wanted to stop the influence of powerful people called oligarchs. They also wanted the right to speak and think freely without fear.

Thousands of people joined the protests in the center of Kyiv. They turned Independence Square into a huge living camp.

The camp had many useful parts for the people living there. There were kitchens to make food and first aid posts for the sick. They even had stages for speeches, debates, and musical performances. Volunteers called the Maidan Self-Defense units helped guard the area. They used makeshift uniforms, helmets, shields, and sticks to protect the camp.

As time went on, the situation became much more difficult. The weather was very cold with lots of snow.

Clashes between police and protesters happened many times. In January 2014, new laws made it harder for people to protest. This caused even more anger and larger crowds. On the weekends of December 1 and 8, between 400,000 and 800,000 people gathered in Kyiv. Fighting grew very intense on Hrushevsky Street during late January. By February, the conflict reached a very serious peak.

The uprising reached its climax in mid-February 2014. Fierce fighting between activists and police led to many deaths. Almost 100 protesters and 13 police officers died during these clashes.

Because of this, President Yanukovych and his ministers fled the city. On February 21, an agreement was signed to form a new government. Parliament removed Yanukovych from his job the very next day. This led to many big changes and new elections in May 2014.
