Protests began in Kyiv at Independence Square. The protests started after President Viktor Yanukovych decided not to sign a deal with the European Union. Instead, he chose to have closer ties with Russia. Many people felt the government was corrupt. They also wanted more rights to speak and think freely.

Thousands of people lived in the square. They built a huge camp. It had kitchens, first aid posts, and stages for speeches. It was very cold and snowy, but people stayed.
