In May 1968, France experienced a massive period of social unrest. This time was filled with protests, strikes, and civil disorder. It was one of the most important uprisings in modern European history. The movement changed how people thought about politics and society. It began because many people felt the country was changing too slowly. While the economy grew, many felt left behind by the old ways.

The trouble started with students at Nanterre University near Paris. They wanted better conditions at their schools. On May 2, the government shut down the Nanterre campus. This caused students to move their protests to the Sorbonne in central Paris.

On May 6, police moved in to stop a student gathering. This led to many arrests and fights in the streets. Students even built barricades to block the police. By May 10, intense battles happened during the night.

Soon, the movement grew much larger than just students. Workers joined the protests because they wanted better pay. They were unhappy with their working conditions and low wages. On May 13, a massive general strike began across the nation. About 10 million workers walked off their jobs. This was the largest strike in the history of France. It shut down factories, buses, and many public services.

President Charles de Gaulle led the French government at this time. The situation became so tense that he briefly left the country. On May 29, he went to a military base in West Germany. He returned the next day to take control again. He dissolved the National Assembly and called for new elections. Before this, leaders had met to discuss the Grenelle agreements. These deals promised workers higher wages and better protections.

Even though a revolution did not happen, things changed forever. The movement weakened the power of President de Gaulle. He resigned from his position the following year. The strikes helped workers get more rights and higher pay. It also helped new groups like feminists and environmentalists grow. Many people in science and art were inspired by these ideas. The events of May 68 still shape French life today.
