The EuroLeague is the highest level of professional men's basketball in Europe. It is widely recognized as the most prestigious club competition on the continent.

The league functions as a semi-closed system with 20 participating teams. Most of these teams, specifically 16, hold long-term licenses or wild cards. This structure means they do not always rely on their domestic league standings to qualify. This unique setup distinguishes the EuroLeague from many other traditional sports leagues.

The league operates through a complex system of licensing and governance. Currently, 13 clubs act as shareholders in the Euroleague Basketball organization. These shareholders form the Board of Directors, which evaluates requests for 3-year licenses. Other teams may participate through 3-year licenses or wild cards. For example, in 2025, the league granted licenses to clubs like KK Crvena Zvezda and Valencia Basket. Some clubs, such as Dubai BC, have even received 5-year licenses. This system ensures a stable group of top-tier teams compete every season.

Historically, the competition has undergone several major transformations. It began in 1958 as the FIBA European Champions Cup. FIBA organized the tournament for many decades. In 1996, the competition was rebranded as the FIBA EuroLeague. However, a significant split occurred in the summer of 2000. A group called ULEB launched its own competition, leading to a period with two different top-tier leagues. This split saw clubs like Real Madrid join ULEB, while others like Panathinaikos stayed with FIBA. Eventually, the organizations negotiated a unified competition under Euroleague Basketball.

The modern era of the league has seen massive commercial growth. In 2015, Euroleague Basketball entered a 10-year joint venture with IMG. This deal was worth a guaranteed €630 million. Projections suggested total revenues could reach €900 million. This partnership helped transition the competition into a true league format. Under this format, 16 teams play each other in a regular season followed by playoffs. This change moved the competition away from the older tournament-style systems used in the past.

Success in the EuroLeague is measured by the number of titles a club wins. Real Madrid is the most decorated club in the history of the competition. They have won 11 titles in total. CSKA Moscow follows them with 8 championships. Panathinaikos has won 7 titles and is the most successful club in the modern era. Since the year 2000, Panathinaikos has secured 6 trophies.

Virtus Bologna holds the distinction of being the first winner of the new era in 2001.

The EuroLeague is also a massive global phenomenon in terms of viewership and attendance. During the 2023–24 season, the league saw an average of 10,383 fans at each match. This figure ranks as the fifth-highest attendance for any professional indoor sports league globally. It is the second-highest basketball attendance in the world. Only the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States has higher average attendance.

This popularity demonstrates the deep passion for basketball across Europe.

Finally, the league is expanding its reach far beyond the borders of Europe. In 2025, the competition held its Final Four tournament in Abu Dhabi. This was a milestone because it was the first time the finals were held outside of Europe. The expansion also included Dubai BC, the first team from outside Europe, excluding Israeli teams. The league has also secured new partnerships with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism and Etihad Airways. These partnerships help bring the EuroLeague to a much broader international audience.
