The Süper Lig is the highest level of professional association football in Turkey. It is also known as the Trendyol Süper Lig due to sponsorship. This league represents the top tier of the Turkish football league system. It is managed by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF). The league is a central part of Turkish sports culture. It provides a platform for elite clubs to compete for national glory.

Competition in the league follows a structured seasonal format. The season typically begins in August and concludes in May. Currently, 18 clubs participate in the league. These teams follow a double round-robin system. This means every club plays every other club twice. One match is played at the home stadium of each team. The other match is played at the opponent's stadium. This results in a total of 34 matches for each club.

Teams earn points based on their match results. A victory earns a team three points. If a match ends in a draw, each team receives one point. No points are awarded for a loss. These points determine the league standings. If teams have equal points, the ranking is decided by head-to-head records. If they are still tied, goal difference is used. Finally, the number of goals scored acts as a tiebreaker. The club with the highest total points is crowned the champion.

Promotion and relegation maintain the movement between league levels. The three lowest-placed teams in the Süper Lig are relegated. They move down to the 1. Lig. To replace them, three clubs are promoted from the 1. Lig. The top two teams from the second division earn automatic promotion. The third spot is decided through a play-off. This play-off involves teams ranked from third to seventh in the 1. Lig. This system ensures constant competition and fresh talent.

Football has a long history in Turkey dating to the late 19th century. English residents brought the sport to Salonica. The Istanbul Football League began in the 1904–05 season. Many regional leagues later emerged in cities like Ankara, İzmir, and Trabzon. The Turkish Football Championship began in 1924 as a knockout tournament. The National Division, or Millî Küme, started in 1937. It included the strongest clubs from Istanbul, Ankara, and İzmir. The modern Millî Lig, known as the Süper Lig, was established in 1959.

Success in the Süper Lig is shared among a small group of clubs. Although 75 clubs have competed in the league, only six have won the title. Galatasaray holds the record with 25 championships. Fenerbahçe has won the title 19 times. Beşiktaş follows with 16 wins. Trabzonspor has secured seven titles. Both Başakşehir and Bursaspor have won the championship once. In the inaugural 1959 season, Fenerbahçe became the first champion. Metin Oktay was recognized as the first "Gol Kralı," or top scorer.

The league is famous for its intense sporting rivalries. The derby between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray is the most watched match in Turkey. International sources rank this as one of the greatest football rivalries in history. The league also serves as a gateway to European competition. The champion and runner-up qualify for the Champions League. The third-place team and the Turkish Cup winner enter the Europa Conference League. Currently, the Süper Lig is ranked 9th in the UEFA coefficient rankings. This ranking is based on club performances in European competitions over five years.
