It serves as the top tier of the English football league system. The league is a corporation managed by a chief executive. The member clubs function as shareholders within this organization. This structure allows the league to operate with commercial independence. This independence was a key goal when the league was first established. It allows the league to negotiate its own broadcast and sponsorship agreements.

The competition follows a specific seasonal structure. A typical season runs from August to May. Twenty clubs compete in the league each year. Each team plays 38 matches during the season. They play every other team twice. One match is played at the home stadium of each club. The other match is played away at the opponent's stadium.

You can calculate the total number of matches using the formula n*(n-1), where n is the number of teams. Most games occur on weekend afternoons. Some matches are scheduled for weekday evenings.

The league operates through a system of promotion and relegation. This system connects the Premier League to the English Football League (EFL). Each season, teams move between the Premier League and the EFL Championship. This movement ensures that the most successful clubs rise to the top. It also means that struggling clubs must fight to stay in the division. This cycle keeps the competition intense for all twenty clubs. It ensures that every match has significant consequences for the teams' future.

The Premier League was founded on 20 February 1992. It was originally called the FA Premier League. Before this, the top tier was the Football League First Division. That division had been the top level since 1888. In the late 1980s, English football faced several difficult challenges. Stadiums had aging facilities and poor safety standards. Following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, the Taylor Report proposed expensive upgrades. These upgrades required clubs to create all-seater stadiums.

To fund these changes, clubs sought more revenue. They decided to break away from the Football League to gain more influence.

Financial growth has been a massive part of the league's history. In 1986, clubs received about £25,000 per year from television rights. By 1988, this rose to £600,000. The breakaway allowed for much larger deals. Currently, the league benefits from a £5 billion domestic television rights deal. Sky and BT Group broadcast the games. Sky broadcasts 128 games, while BT Group broadcasts 32. This deal is expected to rise to £6.7 billion from 2025 to 2029.
