It is a huge event for fans of indoor sports. In the 2023–24 season, an average of 10,383 people attended each match. This is the fifth-highest attendance for any indoor sport in the world. It is also the second-highest for any basketball league. Only the NBA in the United States has more fans.

The league works through a special system of teams and licenses. There are currently 20 teams in the competition. Sixteen of these teams hold long-term licenses or wild cards. This makes the EuroLeague a semi-closed league. Some teams are also shareholders in the league. In 2025, the league expanded to include Dubai BC. This was the first team from outside Europe to join. They received a five-year license that lasts until 2030.

The history of the league began a long time ago. It was first organized by FIBA in 1958. Back then, it was called the FIBA European Champions Cup. The name changed to the FIBA EuroLeague in 1996. In 2000, a group called ULEB started its own competition. This led to a split between FIBA and ULEB. Eventually, the groups joined under Euroleague Basketball. This helped create the unified competition we see today.

Many famous clubs have fought for the title over the years. Real Madrid is the most successful club with 11 titles. CSKA Moscow follows them with 8 titles. Panathinaikos has won 7 titles in total. Panathinaikos is also the best club in the modern era. They have won 6 trophies since the year 2000. Virtus Bologna was the very first winner of the new era in 2001.

They now work with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism. They also work with Etihad Airways. These partners help with the Final Four tournament. In 2025, the league held this tournament in Abu Dhabi. This was the first time the finals were held outside of Europe.
