It is a league known for its tactical discipline and strong defense. Many people consider it one of the best leagues in the world. In fact, it currently ranks second in the UEFA coefficient rankings. This ranking is based on how well Italian teams do in European competitions. The league is home to very famous clubs like Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan. Some people even call a group of top teams the "seven sisters." This group includes clubs like Roma, Napoli, Lazio, and Fiorentina.

The league works using a system called a round-robin format. During a season, which runs from August to May, 20 clubs compete. Each club plays every other team twice. They play one game at their own home field. Then they travel to play the other team away. This means every team plays 38 games in total. The season is split into two halves. The first half is called the "andata." The second half is called the "ritorno." Since 1994, teams get three points for a win and one for a draw.

The history of Italian football goes back much further than the current league. The first official championship was held in 1898 in Turin. At that first event, Genoa CFC became the first champion. Before Serie A was formed in 1929, teams played in different ways. Some tournaments used regional groups called Prima Categoria. Later, a format called Prima Divisione split teams into Northern and Southern leagues. In 1929, the country reorganized into a national system. This created Serie A and the second level, Serie B. The very first Serie A winner was Internazionale, also known as Ambrosiana.

Winning the league brings great pride and special rewards. Since 1961, the champion receives the Coppa Campioni d'Italia trophy.

The champion also earns the right to wear a special emblem. This is called the scudetto, which means "small shield." It is a patch with the colors of the Italian flag. Players wear it on their kits during the following season. This tradition has been part of the game since the 1923–24 season. It is a visible sign of being the best in Italy.

Serie A connects to the wider world of global sports. It has always attracted the best players from different countries. Many of these players have even won the Ballon d'Or. The league also helps test new ideas for the sport. In 2016, Serie A was chosen to test video replays. This helped bring new technology to the pitch. The league also uses a system of promotion and relegation. The three lowest teams move down to Serie B each year. Meanwhile, three teams from Serie B move up to join the top level.
