The Eucharist is a very important rite for many Christians.

People use many different names for this special event. Some call it Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper. Others use names like the Blessed Sacrament or the Breaking of Bread. The word Eucharist actually comes from a Greek word meaning "thanksgiving."

This meal is a way for people to express their faith. It is a central part of worship in many churches today.

During the rite, people use specific items called elements. Most churches use bread and wine for this purpose.

Some groups, like Methodists or Baptists, use non-alcoholic grape juice instead. The bread can be leavened or unleavened. A priest or leader performs a prayer called the Eucharistic Prayer. This happens at an altar or a communion table. After the prayer, the elements are consecrated and then consumed by the people.

Christian belief holds that Jesus started this tradition. He did this at the Last Supper before his crucifixion.

This meal was a Passover meal according to the synoptic Gospels. Jesus gave his disciples bread and wine to eat and drink. He told them to "do this in memory of me." He referred to the bread as his body. He also called the wine the blood of his covenant. The earliest written description comes from the Apostle Paul in the 50s of the 1st century.

Different Christian groups have different ideas about how this works.

The Catholic Church teaches transubstantiation. This means the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ. The taste and smell stay the same, but the substance changes. Eastern Orthodox churches also believe an objective change happens. Lutherans believe Christ is present "in, with, and under" the bread and wine. Reformed Christians believe there is a real spiritual presence of Christ.

Because of these different views, the Eucharist is a major topic for church leaders.

Many different names are used depending on the tradition. Catholics and Lutherans often use the word "Mass." Eastern traditions might call it the "Divine Liturgy." The term "Communion" became popular after the Protestant Reformation. Some groups, like the Plymouth Brethren, see it as a memorial. Even with these differences, the rite remains a key theme in Christian art and history.
