This specimen was then sent to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. There, William F. Simpson and Bob Masek prepared the bones for study. 
In 1993, the genus was officially named and described. Paul Sereno, Catherine Forster, Raymond R. Rogers, and Alfredo M. Monetta led this work. The name *Eoraptor* comes from two languages. The first part is Greek for "dawn." This refers to its primitive, early nature. The second part is Latin for "plunderer." This refers to its grasping hands and meat-eating habits. The species name, *lunensis*, comes from the Latin for "moon." This refers to the "Valley of the Moon," where it was found. 
Scientists still debate exactly where *Eoraptor* fits on the dinosaur family tree. Its precise placement within Dinosauria has been unstable. For a long time, many thought it was a basal theropod. A theropod is a group of meat-eating dinosaurs. However, studies from 2012 onward often classify it as a basal sauropodomorph. Other research suggests it might be a transitional form. It might be a saurischian close to both groups. This debate shows how much scientists learn as they find new fossils. 
*Eoraptor* lived during the Late Triassic period. This was approximately 231 to 228 million years ago. It lived in Western Gondwana, in what is now northwestern Argentina. The environment was a volcanically active floodplain. It was a warm and humid place with seasonal rainfall. Giant conifers and ferns grew in the highland forests. While *Eoraptor* lived there, it was not the most common animal. Dinosaur fossils only make up about 6% of the total samples found in the Ischigualasto Formation. Most animals in that ecosystem were not dinosaurs.
