Enmerkar was a famous king from ancient Sumer. People say he ruled for 420 years. He is known as the builder of Uruk. This was a very big city.

Enmerkar is also a hero in many stories. Legend says he invented writing. A messenger had a hard time remembering long messages. To help, the king put words on clay. This was the first clay tablet.

He also helped his people grow food. He and his wife, Enmerkarzi, were great builders. Enmerkar led trips to a land called Aratta. He wanted gold and stones for his city.

In some stories, he won against Aratta using smart ways. He did not always use war. He even won contests using riddles. One story says he made a cloth of a new color. Another story says he made a tool from a reed. These tales helped people praise the old days of Uruk. His name lived on for a very long time.
