In the past, editors had to gather many writers. They would ask experts to write special articles. Some editions used a plan called "continuous revision." This meant they updated every article on a set schedule. This helped keep the information fresh and correct. The 15th edition used a special three-part structure. It had short articles for quick facts. It also had long articles that could be 310 pages long. A single volume showed how all knowledge fits together.

This famous project began in Edinburgh, Scotland.

It was first published between 1768 and 1771. At first, it came out in weekly parts. These parts eventually formed three thick volumes. The early publishers were Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell. Later, the books were managed by the firm A & C Black. Over many years, different people and companies owned it. One recent owner was a Swiss billionaire named Jacqui Safra. The Britannica has traveled from Scotland to the United States. It has changed many times since those first years.

There are many important numbers in its history.

The second edition grew to 10 volumes. By the fourth edition, it reached 20 volumes. The 15th edition was huge, with 32 volumes and 32,640 pages. Since the 1900s, the total word count stayed near 40 million words. The 9th edition, from 1875 to 1889, is called the "Scholar's Edition." It was known for having a very high style. In 1932, the company started its new revision policy. This helped the books stay useful for a long time. The 15th edition was the very last printed version.
