The Great Soviet Encyclopedia is a massive collection of books written in Russian. It was designed to be a huge source of knowledge for many people. This set of books was very large and filled with many facts. The third edition is especially famous for its size. It contains more than 95,000 articles for readers to study. It also includes nearly 35,000 maps and illustrations to show how things look.

This entire third edition contains about 21 million words. It was a major way to share information with the world.

Creating such a huge project required a very careful way of working. Editors had to organize many different topics into many volumes. The third edition was split into 30 separate books. One volume, Volume 24, was even split into two different books. One of those books was a full-sized book all about the USSR.

This helped make sure every topic had enough space. The editors also published a Yearbook every year from 1957 to 1990. This yearbook gave people new and up-to-date information every single year.

This big project started because of a new idea in 1923. A man named Otto Schmidt first suggested making this encyclopedia. He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1924, he worked with a group of smart people to make a plan. This group included a poet named Valery Bryusov and a mathematician named Veniamin Kagan. They also worked with Anatoly Lunacharsky, who was in charge of education. Their plan was officially agreed upon in April 1924.

There were three main versions of the encyclopedia made over many years. The first edition came out between 1926 and 1947. It had 65 volumes and 65,000 entries. The second edition was published from 1950 to 1958 and had 50 volumes. It included 100,000 entries and two index volumes. The third edition was released between 1969 and 1978. This version focused a lot on science and math. It looked closely at things like space technology and atomic physics.

Because these books were so important, they were shared in many languages. A version was translated into English and published in 31 volumes. Another version was translated into Greek and had 34 volumes. The Greek version was special because it added hundreds of new articles about Greece. These new articles were marked so readers knew they were extra. In the year 2000, the third edition was even put online. This allowed people to see the text and pictures on a computer.
